A rough start to November with hurricane Sandy and a snow storm that followed shortly after. A coastal storm that caused such destruction to our region. I’ve never seen our city in such ruins. Floods that have taken over towns, fires started from power-lines, uprooted trees that tore up sidewalks, crushed houses, cars and had even taken lives. There was a shortage of gas with massive lines at limited locations, lack of transportation causing a mad rush of people piling onto trains/ buses like sardines.
My heart goes out to all those families that have lost loved ones and those who lost their homes along with all their belongings to the high tides and electrical fires. Even though I lost electricity for a little over a week and walked around a freezing cold house. I am most fortunate to hear that my family and friends around me are all okay.
I have never realized how we take electricity for granted. The day feels shorter now that we have less sun light. Sitting in a dark home with lanterns and candles was hard to conduct a productive day. I felt a bit lost with no internet or television and spotty cell service.
I was able to pack some bags of clothes to donate. We were so disappointed that the Salvation Army was closed on Sundays. But it worked out perfectly, there was a Salvation Army truck parked in the back lot ready for pick up. The driver was going straight to Far Rockaway. If you’d like to take part in helping you can sign up at some of these sites. It’s so nice to see so many people come together to lend a helping hand.
